Directorate of Customs proposes to continue administering seized goods

Representatives of the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) met with the members of a special commission of deputies that intend to create a new organization to manage seized goods. DGA proposed that the illegal goods retained or seized by the DGA continue to be administered by the institution and not by a new body that legislators intend to create to manage seized or forfeited.

 

DR President authorizes extradition  of three Dominicans accused of drug trafficking

President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, ordered by decree the extradition to the United States of three Dominicans, requested on drug trafficking charges. Those extradited are Wendy Paulino, Wilton Paulino, and Rafael Darío González Amparo.

  

Abinader says on August 17 he will say if he will run for re-election

Decisions and minutes of the Chamber of Accounts  cannot be disclosed

Mario Fernández Burgos, a member of the current Plenary of the Chamber of Accounts, denounced that the minutes of the sessions of the Chamber of Accounts are fully embargoed until 2025, after  the previous plenary session decided to restrict public knowledge into the chamber activities.

"The magistrates Elsa Catano, Tomasina Tolentino and Elsa Peña have refused to repeal the resolution, despite publicly saying they are committed to transparency," said Fernández Burgos.

From 2013 to 2022, the three plenary sessions that have made up the Chamber of Accounts planned to carry out 1,485 audits, but only carried out 429.

At least 42 dead and thousands displaced in Haiti after flooding

Court dictates sentence against members of the drug trafficking network led by César Emilio Peralta

The members of the drug trafficking network led by César Emilio Peralta, alias “César el Abusador”, were sentenced to three and seven years in prison.

All those sentenced, including Marisol Mercedes Franco, wife of "al Abusador" plead guilty and reached an agreement with the Public Ministry.  

 

The National Directorate for Drug Control seizes firearms and cocaine

The National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) seized 25 packages of cocaine, 54 pounds of marijuana, two rifles, two shotguns and a pistol, in two simultaneous operations carried out in the provinces of Barahona and Pedernales.  

 

Bahamian authorities detain foreign nationals, including Dominicans, in possible human smuggling ring

Bahamian officials said they had detained 22 foreigners, including two children, on Sunday after intercepting a 32-foot vessel in Bahamian waters.

Police Press Liaison Officer, Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings, told reporters that the group included 13 men, 6 women, 2 children and one infant from Ecuador, Italy, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Brazil. They were reportedly on their way to the United States.

The consolidated public debt (including intergovernmental debt) as of April 2023 amounted to US$74,282.6 billion. As of April 2023, the consolidated public debt was 60.7% of GDP; of which 44.7% corresponded to the debt of the non-financial public sector.  

 

U.S. Embassy stands with the LGBTQI+ community in the Dominican Republic

Media outlets reported on the information released in the weekly Ask the Consul column in Listin Diario dedicated to celebrating pride month.  The article reads: ”The month of June is celebrated around the world as Pride Month and the U.S. Embassy stands with the LGBTQI+ community in the Dominican Republic and around the world.  Since 2013, U.S. embassies and consulates have adjudicated same-sex marriage visa applications the same way that we adjudicate applications for opposite gender spouses.”
